Bat Rolling is it Legal?
Bat Rolling is a practice where bat is put under pressure between two rollers to break composite fibers which gives a composite bat more of a trampoline effect. According to ASA rules bat rolling or any other method to artificially break fibers of composite bat is bat altering and is ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL in all ASA play.
Many websites claim that Bat Rolling is undetectable; however, THIS IS FALSE!!!! ASA has teamed up with Easton to develop a Portable Bat compression test.
According to Rule 3 Section 7 NOTE: "The characteristics of any
approved equipment can not be changed. Examples...." Therefore, according to our
rules, rolling of one's bat is illegal and would make that bat an altered bat according
to Rule 1 Altered Bat: When the physical structure of a legal softball bat has been changed.

Many website falsely claim that this is legal and not detectable. ASA has made available a portable bat barrel compression tester that measures the trampoline effect of a bat. The bat barrel compression tester determines if the bat meets ASA standards by measuring the flex inthe bat barrel. If the bat exceeds the 98mph standard, the bat will be banned from ASA play. To purchase a portable bat compression tester contact Don McGee with AR ASA. The cost for the units are approximately 700$.
Starting June 2008, all new bats are artificially broke in before testing to ensure they meet the 98mph standards after the bates are broke in. Easton has taken the next step by producing bats that have a strip that comes off the bat after it has exceeded the 98mph standard. Fo more information go to http://www.clearlythefuture.com
